Joel Torres's research at TMI recognized in the 'Impact of Industrial Doctorates Awards 2022'

On October 3rd, a commemorative event was held in honor of the 10th anniversary of industrial doctorates, where the eagerly awaited Impact Awards 2022 were also presented. These awards acknowledge the profound impact that industrial doctoral projects have had on society, highlighting the exceptional work of researchers.

The Industrial Doctorates Plan celebrated its tenth anniversary on Wednesday with an event at the Palau de la Música Catalana. The event was presided over by the Minister of Research and Universities, Joaquim Nadal i Farreras, who witnessed the presentation of the distinguished Impact Awards 2022.

Among the honorees is Dr. Joel Torres, whose doctoral thesis was carried out at the School of Civil Engineering of the UPC in collaboration with the company TMI (Técnicas Mecánicas Ilerdenses). Joel Torres was honored in the People Impact category for his outstanding contribution.

Joel Torres's success and research stem from a fruitful collaboration with TMI in 2015. At that time, TMI needed an innovative mind to lead a project aligned with its business vision. Joel Torres embraced this opportunity, turning the proposal into the subject of his doctoral thesis.

During the project's development, they achieved a significant milestone by securing support from the CDTI (Center for Industrial Technological Development), enabling them to establish a cutting-edge laboratory at TMI, along with the installation of specialized testing equipment.

This laboratory was where they conceived and built an innovative machine designed to study the flowability and behavior of granular and powdery products. This achievement crystallized in a patent, titled 'Device for testing the collapse of a column of powdery or granular material.'

Joel Torres's hard work culminated in the delivery and presentation of his thesis in 2021, a milestone that served as a springboard for subsequent recognition at the Impact Awards of the Industrial Doctorates Program in 2022. In this inaugural edition of the awards, not only the excellence of collaborative research in various industrial doctoral projects is highlighted but also the effort to bring this research closer to the public, anticipating present and future challenges and the kind of impact it would generate.
